IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 Sample - 11th Oct 2024

Sample Answer:

The table illustrates the percentage of households in a European country that owned three categories of household appliances, namely washing machines, refrigerators, and vacuum cleaners, in four distinct years: 1920, 1940, 1960, and 1980.

Overall, there was a general increase in the ownership of all three appliances over the period. While no households owned refrigerators in 1920, the ownership rates for washing machines and vacuum cleaners were already at 40% and 30%, respectively. By 1980, however, all households had acquired vacuum cleaners and washing machines, and the vast majority had refrigerators.

Looking more closely at the trends, refrigerator ownership started at 0% in 1920, but grew rapidly to reach 90% by 1980. In comparison, the percentage of households with vacuum cleaners rose steadily from 30% in 1920 to 100% by 1980, demonstrating the highest adoption rate over the period. Washing machines also saw a consistent increase from 40% in 1920 to 100% in 1980, though its rise was somewhat slower in comparison to refrigerators and vacuum cleaners.

In summary, while all three household appliances showed an upward trend in ownership over the 60-year period, refrigerators experienced the most significant increase, going from non-existent to being in 90% of households. The vacuum cleaner was the first to reach full saturation in households by 1980.
